Alcoves to enhance living spaces

An alcove has become an important architectural element in the styling of a home. It adds interest and character to the living space and enhances the decor. An alcove is a recessed portion of the wall and can be part of any room in the house to showcase your books, paintings, and objects of art.

From kitchen niches to recessed openings in the bedroom or living room, the architecture of every home is enhanced by merely changing the depth of the wall. An ideal way is to create a special alcove in your living room to display beautiful artifacts or your family treasures that are priceless for their sheer historical eminence.

Dazzling display

If you have a large living space, then it is ideal to create an alcove with demarcations in place so as to bring in a sense of privacy. It is a charming addition in the living room that may also be used for entertaining guests. You can highlight a painting or your collection of books, or even turn an alcove into a mini library. You can cover it with glass shelves to showcase your porcelain or crystal collection. These precious objects are on display yet safe.

Storage space

Another option is to fit shelves of varying height and depth into an alcove to create a multi-functional space in which an assortment of items can be displayed. A long, low shelf could house larger pieces such as ceramic vases and also provide space for a storage basket underneath, while smaller items – books and family photographs, for instance, – can be placed higher up.

While alcoves are typically built into the structure of the house, that doesn’t mean you can’t adapt this space as per your needs. There are many ways to turn an awkward nook into a useful storage area. Here are ideas for innovative alcoves in your living space

Twist to tradition

For a traditional living room, a shallow alcove in a bare wall can be made to look ornate by panelling it with rich, dark wood or Italian marble with a wood border. An interesting effect can also be given by painting the alcove with a contrasting colour or with a different texture.

Study space

Another option is to create a cosy study area in a living room by placing a desk into a deep alcove next to a window to make the most of natural light. Set up bookshelves, either freestanding or on the walls, a soft reading lamp, a table for your mug of tea and choose an easy chair or an ottoman. A favourite piece of wall art and a warm throw will complete this miniature private corner. Take measurements before buying furniture to ensure they fit well into the space.

Art nook

If the alcove has a very shallow depth, then best way to embellish the space is by displaying painting or pictures. You could choose a set of pictures all linked by a theme, colour or subject. Create your layout on the floor first, so you do not ruin the wall with too many unnecessary holes.

Light it right

Suitable lighting is required depending on what an alcove is used for. The most popular way to light up an alcove is by using ambient light fixtures to help spread light out from the alcove. Since most alcove lights are hidden, lighting sources such as florescent light covers are one of the most common options for alcove lights.

Alcoves can also be backlit, and this produces a dramatic effect in light and shade. They can also be lit from below in case of translucent shelves. This is especially effective when there is a display of intricate sculptures and statues. Light it right and turn an alcove into a focal point.
