Be it the most exotic colour pattern or the subtlest texture, wallpaper makes a fine design statement. A totally bland, ordinary room can appear stylish and spectacular by merely opting for a wallpaper mural, depicting a theme or a style in an array of colours.
Wallpaper is a simple technique to bring in cheer and warmth, while adding novelty to a room. It brings in that unique personality quotient by giving ample room to exercise creativity.
Styles and textures
Wallpaper comes in unlimited combinations of colours, styles and textures, with the only limiting factor being imaginative representation. For instance, a living room can be made to appear opulent and futuristic merely by the way the wallpaper is used and the colour scheme adhered to.
Thus, a totally contrasting colour scheme can be used on different walls in a room, with the contrasting colour textured wallpaper lining the walls in an angle and further extending to the ceiling, giving a totally futuristic look.
Similarly, a stunning décor could be created by adopting the same colour scheme but varying the patterns on the wallpaper used for different walls in the room. Again the theme adopted in the interior can be reflected in the wallpaper in terms of patterns, thus enhancing the décor.
A room can also be made to look different and unique by adopting patterns and colour schemes on the wallpaper in total contrast to the décor. Thus, a totally contemporary setting with plain patterns and straight line furniture can appear fabulous with colourful floral wallpaper.
Wallpaper can also be used on one of the walls as a highlight or accent for the room. Besides acting as a highlight zone, the wall, especially if bright colours and patterns are used, can act as the enhancing element, camouflaging plain less attractive furnishings.
Depending on the use the room is put to, design and colour scheme of the wallpaper needs to be chosen. Thus, a living room would warrant a totally different kind of wallpaper as against a bedroom or children’s room or study.
For instance, wallpaper mural depicting farm animals or cartoon characters, would be very appropriate for a kids room. Likewise, a pastel shade, geometrical patterned wallpaper would blend in very well into a study.
Use of wallpaper
Besides the nature of the room, its size, age of the walls, architecture of the house, type of furniture, are factors that need to be addressed while deciding on the wallpaper.
Thus, a fairly large sized room would be able to accommodate wallpaper in bold prints that are rich in colour and texture. But a smaller space would warrant lighter colours and subtler patterns to open up the space.
A point to be noted here is wallpaper need not always sport patterns. It can also be plain, sporting bright colours, highlighted by beautifully patterned wall borders which accentuate as well as add character to the walls.
Similarly, the whole wall need not be covered with wallpaper. You can create your own wall art by simply cutting out squares of differently patterned wallpaper and framing the same. These pieces of wall art look spectacular when hung on the wall, giving a unique touch to the room.
Wallpaper also need not be confined to merely walls, but extended to cover old table tops too where they add a bit of variety and cheer. Likewise, wallpaper can be used on only one portion of the wall, like a small portion of the wall below the ceiling where it can appear totally novel.
Wallpaper can also be used to explicitly to cover up imperfections on the wall by deftly varying the patterns in the imperfect area. The differential pattern camouflages the imperfections leaving only a piece of art to display.
There is also no limit to the structure of the patterns embossed in the wallpaper. Depictions could range from totally wild, abstract representations to the utterly subtle, subdued art, encompassing a combination of colours equally limitless.
