Ceramic tiles require very little effort to keep clean. A bit of care will keep your tiles looking like new for many years. Wipe tiles on a daily basis using water and then dry them with a clean cloth or sponge. This will avoid the build-up of dirt and hard water stains that gather on the surface.
Glazed wall tiles
- Glazed wall tiles require little maintenance; however bathroom tiles, particularly those in the shower area need a little more care as soap leaves a film on tiles.
- Wall tiles should be wiped regularly using a soft cloth to remove soap before it dries. For stubborn spots, crème cleansers, spray and wipe type of products can be used. A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water also helps.
Unglazed wall tiles
- Unglazed floor tiles require a bit more care. Since they are porous they require extra attention and spills on such tiles should be washed immediately.
- Vinegar mixed with warm water acts as a good natural cleaning agent. If you ever need to use a stronger cleaner make sure it is neutral i.e. non-acidic and non-alkaline.
- If you have heavy furniture in the house try to place felt pads to the legs which will help to reduce the wear and tear of the tiles and protect it from scratches while shifting or moving furniture.
The use of harsh abrasive and corrosive cleaners should be avoided particularly on decorated tiles that incorporate metal such as gold or platinum.
